Introduction
moss
Very few plants grow in Antarctica, but however there are actually plants in Antarctica which I did not know of. The plant that is on this website is mosses. The mosses in Antarctica are very short and soft. The plants in Antarctica do not have leaves and long stems, the don’t have flowers or seeds, and they do not grow very tall.
When and where do mosses grow
moss growing up rocks
When it is summer mosses grow around wet areas beside lakes, streams or snow patches. They grow less than a millimetre each year. When it is winter there is no sunlight for months so they lack in activity. McMurdo dry valleys which is part of the two precent of Antarctica which is not covered in ice during the long winter, is where most of the moss grows in Antarctica along the rocks.
Calliergon giganteum
Calliergon giganteum
Calliergon giganteum grows in the Arctic Circle. There are winds
up to 110 miles per hour the average winter temperature is -25°c, and the summer
is rarely over 10°. It is dark most of the time in winter and summer only last
for six to eight weeks and it is partly cloudy too. So that means that plants
get little sunlight. There is an average 30 cm of rain fall a year. The Artic
Calliergon giganteum moss grows in fresh water lakes and in fens. The Calliergon
giganteum is found growing at the bottom of tundra lake beds and is around blogs
and fens. They have leaves that are usually one cell thick. They do not have
flowers but there are leaves all over the stem. The Calliergon giganteum grows
very slow only one centimetre per year. It also lives very long. The shoots live
up to 8 or 9 years and the leaves live for four. It is the slowest growing and
longest living fresh water moss.
When the Calliergon giganteum is not growing it stores nutrients
so new leaves can grow quickly. It is use to strong winds because it grows near
the ground. Because it grows under water it is protected from the strong
winds.
